March 2004
Dear Friends:
I’d like to share some exciting news with you. The University of
Dayon has entered into an initial agreement with NCR to purchase
a 49-acre parcel of property that runs from Brown Street to the
Great Miami River. It’s the doorway to campus — and a gateway to
downtown and the southern suburbs.
The redevelopment of this property presents an extraordinary
opportunity for the University of Dayton to expand campus, help
draw new jobs to the city of Dayton and promote commercial
development by the river. We will spend the next several months
examining the property in great detail before we finalize a
sales agreement. It will take the work and cooperation of many
to eventually make this land productive again. We look to play a
key leadership role in this cooperative effort.
UD and NCR have grown up together from humble roots. Nearly 120
years ago Brother Maximin Zehler bought some land to expand the
school and give the Patterson family some needed capital to
start a cash register business. Today, NCR is a leading global
technology company that employs nearly 700 UD graduates
worldwide, and we have grown into one of the 10 highest-ranked
Catholic universities in the nation and Ohio’s largest
independent university.
This is not the first time UD has embarked on a major
revitalization project. In 2000, we teamed with the city of
Dayton, CityWide Development and Miami Valley Hospital in a
multi million-dollar public-private partnership to rebuild the
Fairgrounds neighborhood. Today, there’s a waiting list of
qualified buyers for homes in the revitalized neighborhood near
campus.
Our history is rooted in faith and collaboration. We have
received tremendous community support for the revitalization of
this land. I ask for your support and prayers as we work to
finalize this agreement. Thanks for sharing in my excitement
about this expansion opportunity.
Sincerely,
F
